What is the story with black eyed peas?

JSOR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BLACK EYED PEAS 2024

For frozen, a general visual inspection should be done:
Hanover frozen black eyed peas are of the cleanest.

For canned, Goya, Stop and Shop and other brands with a hechsher: they rarely have any issues, and are ok without inspection, however one may stringent if they would like to check.

For dried or fresh black eye beans, they should be carefully inspected as in previous years using clap method, or other way of looking them over, in order to inspect the beans from both sides.

TO CHECK ALL TYPES OF BLACK-EYED PEAS:

  1. Inspect the peas for holes or dark-colored stains, as these may indicate an insect beneath the thin peel.
  2. If there is a dark spot on the peel, remove the thin skin and check if there is a cavity with a bug in it.

NOTE: The black “eye” spot is not a sign of infestation. Similarly, orange-colored stains on the surface are not
signs of infestation. Only dark or black stains are of concern.
